Balcony solar monitoring: how to see the electricity you actually use
Generation alone does not tell the whole story. Compare it with household electricity use.
Monitoring starts after installation. An inverter's generation total alone cannot show how much your bill has fallen. The same panels can deliver different results depending on household routines, so compare generation with electricity use.
Use a metering smart plug to understand appliance consumption

A smart plug with energy monitoring can show when appliances such as a refrigerator, washing machine or computer use electricity. Choose a device rated for the appliance and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Compare its readings with the inverter's generation graph for the same day. A refrigerator running 24 hours a day is one example of a continuous load that can use some daytime solar output.
Self-consumption affects the benefit

Self-consumption is the share of generated electricity used directly at home. Electricity generation does not necessarily produce bill savings if no load is using it at that moment.
What happens to surplus electricity depends on the meter and the connection contract. Check the arrangements for your home with the installer or electricity supplier.
Move flexible appliance use into daylight hours

Where the appliance supports it, schedule washing, dishwashing or drying for sunny hours. This can increase direct use of the same solar output.
Working from home or having family at home during the day can increase the overlap. When everyone is away, continuously operating appliances matter more. Some uses, such as keeping rice warm into the night, are less flexible.
Build a monthly record of your home's results

Record generation, billed electricity use and the bill together over a month. Compare with the same month before installation to reduce seasonal differences, while considering changes in weather and household use.
As records accumulate, they provide evidence for deciding whether to add panels or adjust routines. Measured results make expectations more reliable.
